Before his showbiz debut, Song Joong Ki was set to be an athlete. As a short-track speed skater, he represented his hometown at the national level – until his first year in high school when he had to give up the sport altogether following an injury. He then focused on school, excelling in his studies so much so he scored 380 out of 400 in one of his college entrance examinations. It was while preparing for one of his exams that he was scouted on the subway.
Song Joong Ki didn’t hop aboard the showbiz train right away. He was in his third year at Sungkyunkwan University studying Business Administration when he finally decided to try out acting. The rest, of course, is history as he’s now – well, “a household name” might be an understatement for this certified matinee idol.
Not only does Song Joong Ki have the looks. He’s also got the talent to make every role come to life – from historical drama to action, he thrives. And he just keeps on going as he stars yet in another exciting show – Reborn Rich, one of this year’s top-trending series exclusively shown in the Philippines on Viu powered by PLDT Home.
If you’re in the mood for a little Song Joong Ki binge-watch session, here’s a list of his starrers that will, for sure, make you fall in love with him even more!
What to do if you’re reincarnated into a family so rich and powerful but one you despised in your past life?
In Reborn Rich (alternatively titled The Youngest Son a Conglomerate), Song Joong Ki stars as that lucky-unlucky person in a series of reincarnation and revenge combined. He plays Yoon Hyun Woo, a senior manager in the Future Asset Management Department of Soonyang Group who was one of the company’s top performers until he was framed and accused of embezzling funds. The scandal leads to his death, but in a twist of fate, he wakes up in the body of Jin Do Joon, the youngest grandchild of Soonyang’s founder. Out for revenge, Hyun Woo uses his knowledge and his new identity to plot the downfall of the family that has betrayed him.
Just days after the release of the pilot last November, Reborn Rich ranked number one in South Korea’s most buzz-worthy dramas. It overthrew The Queen’s Umbrella, which occupied the top spot for four weeks. Following its third episode release, Song Joong Ki’s new show already garnered the highest nationwide rating at 10.826% according to Nielsen Korea.
Reborn Rich episodes drop on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on Viu.
In this drama, Song Joong Ki is Yoo Shi Jin, captain of a South Korean Special Forces Unit. While off-duty, he and a fellow soldier apprehend a thief only for the latter to get injured and eventually hospitalized. At the hospital, Yoo Shi Jin meets Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo), a doctor who initially mistakes Shi Jin for a criminal gang member due to his call sign “Big Boss.” The two date until Big Boss abruptly moves overseas for a peacekeeping mission, leaving Mo Yeon uninformed of his deployment.
The two lovers are reunited in the war-stricken country after Mo Yeon gets sent as a medical volunteer. With Big Boss’ disappearing act being a sore point for Dr. Mo Yeon and against the backdrop of ever-present danger, it’s now on Shi Jin to charm his way back into her good graces and rekindle their relationship.
Set during the Joseon Dynasty when women were not allowed to work or study, Sungkyunwan Scandal follows the story of Kim Yoon Hee (Park Min Young) – a young lady who is compelled to do everything to pull her family up from poverty.
With hopes of entering Sungkyunkwan University, Min Young decides to dress up as a man and take the men’s national exam. She eventually gets in and becomes friends with a band of boys – the “Jalgeum Quartet” – all helping protect her identity en route to graduation. One of whom is Goo Yong Ha (Song Joong Ki), whose charming and playful personality steals the show. (It’s a journey that’s come full circle for Sungkyunkwan University alumnus Song Joong Ki who shines in this breakout role!)
A rewatch of The Innocent Man from a decade ago is still a must today among fans who know what quality romance and revenge dramas are. Here, Kang Ma Ru (Song Joong Ki) is a medical student who falls in love with his neighbor Han Jae Hee (Park Si Yeon) – a news anchor who, desperate to escape poverty, chooses to leave and become the mistress of Seo Jung Gyu, Taesan Company’s CEO. The narrative only worsens with an ambitious Jae Hee killing her lover to take over the company and Ma Ru taking the fall for the crime.
Years later, a 30-year-old Ma Ru sets out for revenge against Jae Hee. The first order of business? Seducing Jae Hee’s stepdaughter and taking over the company himself.
Song Joong Ki may not have a lead role in this medical drama, but it’s still worth seeing. This drama revolves around the lives of OB-GYN doctors, with Seo Hyeo Young (Jang Seo Hee) front and center. She gets demoted to a rural hospital following a scandal resulting from a patient’s abortion. She then finds out she’s pregnant with a married man’s child and tries to hide it.
In this drama, Song Joong Ki plays Ahn Kyung Woo, a playful second-year resident and assistant to Dr. Seo in the rural hospital. Aside from the drama surrounding its protagonists, OB & GYN also sheds light on the heart-wrenching decisions made in the OB-GYN department and how it affects the lives of patients.
