Is Twitter Shutting Down? Here’s the Lowdown on Why Users Are Panicking

Nov 18, 2022   •   Meryl Medel

Today, Twitter users have been doing one of two things. Either they’re telling their followers which other platform they can be found, or they’re just shitposting their way through what they believe is the Twitter apocalypse. Or both. Here’s why.

Mass exodus at Twitter?

Platformer’s Zoë Schiffer got a tip that the Twitter office has allegedly been closed, and employees have been refused access to the premises. Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk and his team are allegedly “terrified employees are going to sabotage the company” while also attempting to narrow down a list of Twitter employees they can keep and ones they need to prevent from accessing the office.

We’re hearing this is because Elon Musk and his team are terrified employees are going to sabotage the company. Also, they’re still trying to figure out which Twitter workers they need to cut access for.

— Zoë Schiffer (@ZoeSchiffer) November 17, 2022

Similarly, The Verge’s Alex Heath reported that hundreds of Twitter employees resigned after Musk gave an ultimatum about working towards his ideal for Twitter or what they call “extremely hardcore Twitter 2.0.” Several engineering teams have also resigned, with one engineer adding that “You cannot run Twitter without this team.”

Hearing from multiple employees that the odds of Twitter breaking in the near future are very high.

The tweets quickly went viral, and more reports from Twitter HQ have continuously come out. This new wave of resignations has been fueling fears that Twitter (or at least Twitter as we know it) is about to meet its end. So users have been in a frenzy since.

At a loss

Twitter users — along with the rest of the world — have had front-row seats to what seems to be an endless series of bad business decisions from the social media’s new owner. Now that Twitter employees and teams resigning en masse are reported nearly every other day, everyone’s scrambling to see where the social media platform is headed.

Home to over 238 million active users worldwide, the seemingly unavoidable Twitter shutdown has users at a loss — and of course, reacting with memes in true Twitter fashion.

Where am I going to talk to myself if twitter is shutting down 😭 this is the only app where I can tweet, get 0 likes, retweets and comments and not get judged for it 😑😑 #RIPTwitter pic.twitter.com/vsrEWyEJYz

Elon Musk’s tweets

Amid the chaos, Musk himself continues to use the platform in his usual way: tweeting like the rest of the world isn’t clamoring for action from his end. “We just hit another all-time high in Twitter usage lol,” he said in one tweet, while in another, he simply shared a meme of Twitter being buried by Twitter itself.

And … we just hit another all-time high in Twitter usage lol

So is Twitter really shutting down?

Chances are it won’t happen today, which is what some users have been afraid of since getting the reports of mass resignation. Since Twitter is a sizable company with a huge market of millions of users, they can’t suddenly shut down the website with no warning. At worst, a shutdown happens, but users may get a week or a month of notice, or there may even be a year of notice to allow users to make arrangements regarding their data and let the Twitter team sunset the social media platform properly.

Another possibility is that we get what Musk describes as “hardcore Twitter 2.0” with all the rapid changes we’ve seen so far and probably a lot more. That is if Musk can convince the recently resigned employees to return or hire new ones.

So what to do?

To request an archive of your Twitter data, including all tweets, replies, and media you’ve ever uploaded, go to Settings –> Your Account –> Download an archive of your data. pic.twitter.com/fgkhjitueE

For now, you should prepare for the worst-case scenario. Tell your Twitter friends and followers where they can reach you in case a shutdown does happen. If you want to keep your tweets and other data, you can download an archive of your data from Twitter.

To do so, simply go to “Settings”, then click “Your Account”, then select “Download an archive of your data”. Once you make the request, Twitter will need a few days to prepare your data for download. But once it’s ready, you will get a notification. Be aware that the data is only available to download for 7 days, and once the 7 days expire, you will need to make another request again. Hopefully, that service will still be available by then.
