#GhibliRedraw: Artists Are Recreating Their Favorite Studio Ghibli Movie Scenes (And They’re Wonderful)

Jun 8, 2020   •   Ina Louise Manto

One is never too old to watch a Studio Ghibli film. Oftentimes, they leave you lessons that would apply to any age. #GhibliRedraw is a tag among artists who recreate scenes from their favorite Studio Ghibli movies in different art styles. It’s refreshing to see these scenes through the eyes of these very talented artists. Here, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite works:

Howl’s Moving Castle, 2004

Among the art posted with the hashtag, scenes from the 2004 film seemed to be a crowd favorite. I guess people just can’t get enough of the gang’s whimsical adventures that took place in different worlds. Also, the Howl and Sophie ship is still sailing, and to be honest, we totally get it. After all, they’re one of the best pairings ever.

The attention to detail is insane on this one! Studio Ghibli films are popular for having beautiful sceneries and Howl’s Moving Castle has some of the best ones.

We all dreamed of having a moment with Howl as Sophie did.

Yes, the world needs more Howl goodness. Who wouldn’t have a crush on him after seeing the film?

Princess Mononoke, 1997

Princess Mononoke is a Studio Ghibli movie that nobody should miss seeing.

San looks like a cherub from a renaissance painting in this version and if you’re not obsessed, what are you doing?!

Spirited Away, 2001

Chances are, Spirited Away is one of the first Studio Ghibli films you watched. Chihiro’s adventures in the spirit world are a roller coaster ride: from witnessing her parents turning into pigs to saying goodbye to Haku.

But did this scene make you cry?

Oh, to run in a field of flowers with a cute boy.

Ponyo, 2008

Ponyo is a movie that the whole family would enjoy! It highlights the importance of friendship and the lengths that some would take just to make sure their friend is alright. Plus, its underwater scenes are too mesmerizing.

Ponyo’s mom is a literal goddess.

Kiki’s Delivery Service, 1989

Kiki’s Delivery Service is a whimsical coming-of-age film. Even if you’re 25, you’ll still be able to relate with 13-year-old Kiki as she moves to a new town and tries to live on her own, away from her family.

#ghibliredraw !! Kiki from nov 2019 lmaooo the file name is do u love me dot png still proud that I drew most of this on my tiny iphone 5s,, added filters and jiji with paint tool sai pic.twitter.com/Ieug2WikfK

This version of the famous bakery just screams: you don’t need to have the most expensive and latest gadgets to do digital art. Sometimes, all you need is good old MS Powerpoint and you’re good to go. Who knew that you can do that in Powerpoint?

The Secret World of Arrietty, 2010

Did you know that Tom Holland was the voice of Shô in the English dubbed version of The Secret World of Arrietty?

Whisper of the Heart, 1995

Alexa, please play “Country Roads” by Yoko Honna! Whisper of the Heart is a movie that will teach you patience and perseverance. You can accomplish anything if you put your mind into it!

Seems like everyone’s still LSS-ing with “Country Roads”.

The Wind Rises, 2013

The Wind Rises is actually based on a real-life story of a Japanese engineer who created a fighter plane during the Second World War. It’s also Hayao Miyazaki’s last film before his retirement.
