What have Filipinos been typing on the search bar? Google finally unveils its annual Year in Search 2022, a compilation of lists of trends, news, personalities, shows, and more Filipinos looked up this year. Google acknowledges 2022 as a “year of reemergence.” Following two years of quarantine, we were allowed to spread our wings a bit more and reimagine the world around us. So here’s a little Google top searches 2022 summary of what caught our search curiosities in this year:

Overall top trending search and most searched news: Halalan 2022

Filipinos relied heavily on Google to search for information about the 2022 national elections — how to find their precincts, voting information, and results. The search “precinct finder” also made its way into the overall top trending search list at number three. Following “Halalan 2022” as the most searched news of the year is “VaxCertPH” its second consecutive year on the top list.

Gwyneth Chua also finds her name in the list of most searched news at number eight. Chua, a.k.a. Poblacion Girl, went viral on social media after violating quarantine protocols last December 2021. She attended a party in Makati after having just landed in the Philippines and tested positive for COVID-19 along with her companions. Last September 2022, she pleaded guilty and was imposed a P20,000 fine by the Makati regional trial court.

The most searched Korean series of 2022: All of Us Are Dead

Even in 2022, the zombie apocalypse trope is still alive and kicking, and the Korean series All of Us Are Dead is solid proof. It was released on Netflix last January 28, 2022, and a month later became the most-watched Netflix series globally for the third week. In its second week, it racked up 113 million hours viewed. It’s no surprise that lead star Park Solomon also finds his name in Google’s most searched male personalities of 2022 at the third spot.

The most searched movie of 2022: Encanto

Encanto clinches the top spot for most searched movies this year followed by Taiwanese horror Incantation and Marvel’s Eternals. Other Marvel movies that made it to the list are Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Although Walt Disney Animation’s Encanto premiered in the Philippines in December 2021, Filipinos’ love for it snowballed in early 2022. It’s hard to ignore a film that’s so colorful, filled with lessons on family, and had number after number of catchy songs to boot! And speaking of songs…

The most searched song lyrics: “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”

We all needed Google’s help to sing Dolores’ part perfectly but we can now sing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” without searching the lyrics. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s masterpiece of a song went on to be the longest-reigning Disney song on the US Billboard Hot 100. Disney Music Asia even recently translated into Tagalog, “‘Wag Ikwento Si Bruno,” which now has 1.3 million views on YouTube.

The most searched male personality: Ricci Rivero

There are a string of reasons why actor-slash-basketball player Ricci Rivero was the Filipino’s top-searched male personality. He started his year helping the UP Fighting Maroons win a historic championship at the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball Finals. It was UP’s first in 36 years! The 24-year-old then accepted the offer to play for the Taoyuan Pauian Pilots in the P.League+ but was released even before a single game due to a knee injury. And then, in a video that trended on social media, he asked actress Andrea Brillantes to be his girlfriend.

Rivero might’ve had quite a year but other male personalities in Google’s most searched list also did too. On the second spot sits Johnny Depp who had a public defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Chris Rock takes the fifth spot likely after that shocking Oscars slap incident and Adam Levine takes the tenth after a scandalous allegation that he cheated on his wife with an Instagram model.

The most searched female personality: Amber Heard

It looks like even Filipinos closely followed the Depp-Heard trial. In 2018, Heard published an op-ed with The Washington Post where she described herself as a victim of domestic abuse. Depp sued her in 2019 for defamation and dragged her to court in a trial that began in April 2022. Depp eventually won but it looks like the court drama from this ex-pair isn’t over.

Following Heard as the second most searched female personality is Kris Aquino who has been in a rough battle for her health this year. Varsity volleyball player Deanna Wong is third while Xyriel Manabat and Bella Racelis clinch the seventh and tenth spots respectively.

The most searched loss of 2022: Queen Elizabeth II

It’s safe to say the whole world was stunned when Queen Elizabeth II passed away last September 8 of old age. She was the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom serving from 1952 to 2022. She reigned for 70 years and 214 days — the longest of any British monarch in history. Filipino actresses Cherie Gil and Susan Roces follow the Queen as the top searched losses of 2022.

Wordle peaked in popularity in early 2022 when thousands of people all over the world started their day guessing the word of the day. ICYDK, you can only play the word game once a day. Players are given 5 chances to guess the word of the day and if they’re successful, they can post their results on social media through square emojis.

Following Wordle’s success, a Pinoy version called Saltong emerged to test Pinoy’s vocabulary. This game even has extra modes — Mini (4 letters), Max (8 letters), and Hex (guess as many words as you can). If you’ve stopped the habit of Wordle and Saltong in the middle of the year, maybe it’s time to get back to it for the holidays!
