Cinephiles know the struggle of catching elusive indie films after their Cinemalaya Film Festival screening. Streaming services like Netflix and JuanFlix occasionally add to their roster, but their libraries are limited. So when events offer screenings of these hard-to-find indie gems, better believe your film-obsessed friend will mark their calendars in red. This July, Cinemalaya celebrates its 20th anniversary with a free retrospective, bringing some local films back to the big screen! Here’s what you need to know.
A month before Cinemalaya holds its 2oth edition, some of its most notable films are coming to the big screen. From July 10 to 27, drop by FDCP Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Davao, and Nabunturan. Admission is free and open to the public but on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those who missed out on watching Aureus Solitos’ 2005 coming-of-age drama Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, now is your chance to bawl your eyes out at the cinema. Treb Montreras’ 2015 film Respeto, which stars hip-hop artist Abra, is also included in the lineup, as is Marlon Rivera’s classic Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank. Overall, the films are a good mix of classics and thought-provoking pieces to laugh or cry to.
