What We Know So Far About ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’

Apr 17, 2026   •   Andy Flores

Fans of the most iconic monster in cinema were finally treated to a glimpse of Takashi Yamazaki’s much-awaited Godzilla Minus Zero. First revealed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 14 and subsequently released across the official social media channels of Godzilla and TOHO, the 49-second teaser for the upcoming kaiju film had viewers on the edge of their seats, racking up over 2.5 million views on YouTube alone within the first day of posting.

If you’re as stoked as we are to see Godzilla back on the big screen soon, here are eight things you need to know about Godzilla Minus Zero:

It is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus Zero is set in 1949, two years after the events of the blockbuster hit Godzilla Minus One (2024), which made history as the first Japanese film to win an Academy Award in the Visual Effects category—and on a modest budget of $15 million.

During CinemaCon, writer and director Takashi Yamazaki said, in this new film, “even deeper desperation will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family.” But despite Minus Zero being a direct sequel to the first film, it will depict a completely new story of disaster on a much bigger scale.

Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are reprising their roles as Koichi and Noriko

Since Godzilla is not quite done yet with Koichi Shikishima and his found family, that means we’re seeing Japanese silver screen heavyweights Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe slip back into their beloved roles as Koichi and Noriko, respectively.

In an official statement, Kamiki shared, “I am incredibly happy to be able to participate in a film set two years after ‘Godzilla-1.0,’ which is one of the most important works in my life. I am also proud to have been able to work with director Takashi Yamazaki and the team again.

The pressure of participating in a Godzilla film that is loved by so many people is the same as with the previous film, but I did my best to make sure that everyone who watches it, and everyone who loves Godzilla, will enjoy it.”

On her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Hamabe stated her character’s name as “Noriko Shikishima,” suggesting that Noriko has finally become part of Koichi’s family registry in this installment.

In a separate comment, she said, “My heart is already racing with excitement, wanting to share this shock with everyone as soon as possible, and wanting to see it in theaters as soon as possible.” She then added, “I hope that this film will be enjoyed and loved by many people.”

Akiko is making a comeback, too!

Minus One’s adorable scene-stealer Sae Nagatani is reprising her role as Akiko, an orphan Noriko and Koichi took in. Akiko appears briefly in the teaser, asleep next to Koichi as a tearful Noriko strokes the little girl’s hair.

In a 2024 talk event, Yamazaki revealed that Akiko was originally written as a male character, but the team found an “acting genius” in Nagatani, who, as a toddler, was able to cry on cue, so they decided to change the script.

The title is *not* a math equation

Without revealing too much, Yamazaki said in an interview that the title “Minus Zero” (stylized as -0.0)  is symbolic of the characters’ attempt to regain some sense of normalcy in post-war (and post-Godzilla Minus One) Japan. He explained that the “minus” is essential to bring back the energy of the first film, but this time, it’s pointed towards “zero.”

Naoki Sato is returning to compose the score for Godzilla Minus Zero

If you loved the score of Godzilla Minus One, you’re in for some great news because the film’s composer, Naoki Sato, is returning to provide music for Godzilla Minus Zero. Till the new score becomes available on streaming, we’ll have Godzilla-1.0 Godzilla Suite II on repeat.

Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese live-action movie to be filmed in full-frame IMAX format. If you ask us, there’s no better way to experience the film than this! Even Yamazaki himself got goosebumps when he watched Godzilla’s return and the action sequences of Minus Zero.

The teaser ends with a spine-chilling cut of Godzilla towering over the Statue of Liberty, hinting at the monster’s arrival in America. The new film will also have dialogue in both English and Japanese, and will see the US military as part of its central theme.

Godzilla Minus Zero is slated for a November 2026 release

Godzilla Minus Zero will stomp its way to Japanese theaters on November 3, 2026—also affectionately called “Godzilla Day.” Meanwhile, the official North American release of the film is set for November 6, 2026. The screening date for other countries, including the Philippines, however, has yet to be announced.
