Earth HourLet’s Go Dark:
8 Thoughts you’ll Have
on Saturday’s Earth Hour

On March 19, 2016, the lights will go out all over the world’ from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The Philippines, awarded as Earth Hour Hero Country from 2009 to 2013, will also go dark as the World Wide Fund Nature’s celebrates the decennial of the iconic Earth Hour where cities across 172 countries become one in turning off their non-essential lights to take a stand against the alarming fight against climate change.

As symbolic as participating in the Earth Hour is, the reality of having no lights whatsoever is something that still begs a lot of questions: What if my candles burns our house? What if a monster suddenly appears behind me? How will I go to the bathroom? The list goes on, but here are 8 more thoughts you’ll surely have come Earth Hour.

8. “How the hell am I going to take my Earth Hour selfie?

“How am I going to tell the world that I’m currently saving it if there aren’t any lights to show my face? Use the flash? Hell nah, my face requires perfect lighting!”

7. “PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ME ALONE.”

You wouldn’t want to be alone when the constant fear of monsters and ghosts suddenly showing up from behind is slowly creeping up on you. Being alone during Earth Hour is a ticket to your (literally) darkest fears, and that’s why you always drag your sibling in front of the bathroom while you take a bathroom break in the dark.

6. The urge to scare people is too damn high

If you live with someone who applies to number 7, and you’re a really a bored jackass who wants something LOL-worthyto do during Earth Hour, perhaps scaring people will turn on a bulb on your head. Here are some low-cost pranks that don’t really need any lights to be hilarious.

You know you’re bound to do one of these on Saturday. Try to record it for the whole world to see.

5. You’ll start getting all existential

“There’s gotta be more in life than this.”

“Did someone create God?”

“In order to be a dancer I’ll have to let go of this comfortable life. Am I willing?”

4. Emo music would be perfect to listen to

And maybe reminisce by the window under the moonlight about your one-inch eyeliner days.

3. “Does this mean that brownouts also count as Earth Hour?”

3 Earth Hourvia earthhour.tumblr.com

A big difference, actually! Brownouts or blackouts are uncontrolled by us consumers but Earth Hour is our way and choice to fight against climate change. This makes Earth Hour one of the most symbolic gestures we can offer to Mother Nature, so let’s do our best to thank her.

2. “So this is what the night sky looks like.”

You don’t even have to go somewhere far to stargaze. If the majority of your city has its lights out, the night sky will have less light pollution which would make Earth Hour is one of the best times to go stargazing.

1. “So what does all of this mean?”

Earth hour is far from just turning off your non-essential lights for an hour. Earth Hour is our collective shout to support and proclaim our ongoing fight to prevent climate change. The world has been celebrating Earth Hour for 10 years now, and it has been successful in letting everyone know that we can all do our share to make a difference.

Abu Poblete

Abu is a fangirl by day, and a sleeping fangirl by night. She is mostly seen on Twitter which she considers her first home even though she loathes with all her being its cancel culture (We can all grow and learn guys!). She ranks as the Philippines' number one Modern Family fan in QuizUp. She's a cool girl (she also wrote this write-up).
