Apr 11, 2023   •   Ina Louise Manto

From seeking revenge to finding love in the most unusual circumstances, Call It Love is a slice-of-life K-drama series streaming on Disney+ that has captured hears through its healing themes. Now that it’s airing its finale on April 12, it’s about time to get to know the actors that breathed life into the characters of Uju and Dojin. We recently had the opportunity to hear more about the actors’ experiences while filming the drama. Whether you’re just beginning to binge-watch the show or has fallen in love with the characters completely, here’s what they have to say about the drama series:

From starting out as a model to starring in hit dramas such as Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, Doctors, and Cheese in the Trap, Lee Sung Kyung has become a household name in South Korea. But amidst all these great characters on her slate, her latest one, Woojoo, is her most comfortable character yet.

“Because I tend to have a very bubbly and bright personality, I have mostly done very bright and bubbly roles. Many people have told me, ‘Oh it must have been so hard to try to portray someone who’s very dark and so calm and quiet.’ However, I have to say that I think Woojoo was probably the most comfortable character that I portrayed,” Sung Kyung shared.

Did you know that Sung Kyung is the eldest daughter in her family? “I think because I related to her so much, I was able to really immerse into the role. In real life, I am the oldest daughter and so I relate to a lot of that, which is placed in her family where she acts as if she is responsible where she is the eldest child.”

“I didn’t really see Woojoo as a difficult character to portray and I just had a great time being Woojoo for the time being.” Being a seasoned actress like Sung Kyung, bringing the character to life was definitely a breeze.

On how the actors choose works to participate in

One of the reasons why Call It Love has become a well-beloved drama series is that we’ve seen a new and fresh side of the actors. Both Sung Kyung and Young Kwang’s characters are both different from their previous ones, which has captivated their audience.

According to Sung Kyung, she’s drawn to slice-of-life stories where you really look into the way people live their actual lives. “I’m drawn to works that have a particular or unique angle, would bring a particular entertainment factor or impact to whoever watches it. At the end of the day, I want the fans to be happy with what I do and I want to bring them joy. Of course, I’m drawn to works where I feel like I can do a good job, and also that makes me want to do a good job,” she added.

On the other hand, Young Kwang likes to imagine himself portraying a character when he’s reading a script. “I also try to see if it’s going to be entertaining; would it be something that people would want to watch? And I think there are certain unique points that I’m personally drawn to, so that would be my criteria for that said project.”

Lee Kwang Young enjoys camping

Throughout the series, we’ve seen the importance of camping to the characters, especially Dongjin. In real life, actor Kwang Young enjoys it too and says it’s more fun to do with a friend than going alone.

“After we finished shooting Call It Love, I actually went camping last winter and I went with a friend and I really enjoyed camping with a friend. I haven’t had a lot of experience going camping; that was actually my second time after when I was a child, and I really enjoyed it. I felt like when you’re there, you find yourself returning back to those days when you have that child-like wonder. And I also felt like the hardships I had inside melted away, like snow. So, I had a great time.”

On finding comfort when they’re stressed or feeling depressed

At the end of the day, our favorite K-drama actors are human too – fully able to feel exhaustion, difficult times, and the need to take a break. So how do they combat stress or the feeling of depression?

Sung Kyung likes to travel alone when she has the opportunity to do so. She also likes to play piano at home and spend time with loved ones, while Young Kwang likes to sleep it all off and then go for a walk. “When there’s a lot on my mind or when I’m feeling lonely like Dongjin, I like to either go on the treadmill that I have at home or just go outside and go for a walk. I always feel better afterward,” he shared.

Love is as vast as the outer space

When asked about the meaning of love or anything they learned about love after filming the series, both actors agreed that love is as vast as outer space, which is coincidental “woojoo” in Korean.

“The characters in our story, they lived a life that’s filled with monotone colors, right? And once love entered their life, it became so colorful, and literally, life was breathed into their daily lives. The character Dongjin after he had lost the light in his life, he had carried on that way. The character Uju, she had been living her life barely, based on or depending on the love she held for her family. So, I feel like love is something that really lets people live. Whether you laugh about it or cry about it, I feel like love is what makes life seem like life itself,” shared Sung Kyung.

Here’s how Young Kwang rewarded himself after filming

Dongjin, as we’ve seen in the drama series, was the epitome of the feeling of loneliness. Did Young Kwang have a hard time escaping the role? “It wasn’t that big of a challenge, but after the shoot was over, I spent like, three months drinking as much as I could. And it was good because I enjoyed drinking, so it was like a reward. I tried to eat and drink a lot so, that’s how I compensated for that period.”

He shared he did this as he had to maintain a physique during filming, which we all know is always challenging. You’ve done a great job, Young Kwang!

If the actors were to meet their characters, what would they say?

“You’re not going to fail. Things are going to work out. You’re going to do a great job and things will come your way. I will pray that happens,” shared Sung Kyung when asked what she would say if she were to meet Dongjin in real life.

Young Kwang on the other hand, says he has a lot of similarities with his character Dongjin. “If I were to meet the character Woojoo, I think I want to say to her, you don’t have to be so strict with yourself,” he answered.

Now that’s some comforting advice we would all love to hear, especially from the characters we’ve grown fond of.

On their favorite scenes

What is your favorite scene or episode in Call It Love? With hours spent filming and retaking scenes, it must’ve been difficult for Kim Young Kwang (Dojin) and Lee Sung Kyung (Woojoo) to pick their faves.

For Sung Kyung, it was the scene where she admits her feelings to Dongjin for the first time. “I can’t actually be drunk when I’m acting the scene. So I remember it was almost as if I was actually drunk and trying to confess my true feelings for Dongjin, because I felt like my heart continued to ache even after filming the scene,” she shared.

“There’s a scene where they’re sharing noodles and Dongjin, a lot of his frustrations 9had shown and had been revealed, and in that scene, Woojoo comforts him,” Young Kwang recalls. “Even though as actors we already know what’s written on the script, we know the lines, we know what’s going on, and still I really felt like Woojoo’s words consoled me.” And that’s when you know you’re successful in bringing a character to life.

It’s never too late to catch Call It Love and find your next favorite slice-of-life drama series. Binge-watch the series on Disney+.
