8 Christmas Films to Watch on Disney Plus to Get Into the Holiday Spirit

Dec 22, 2022   •   Meryl Medel

Christmas — it’s the most wonderful time of the year! You reunite with relatives and friends, you eat a lot of good food, and you get some time off, perfect for some movie marathon with your loved ones. So if you want to enjoy a movie night that matches the holiday spirit, you should settle in with your blankets and hot choco and one of these Christmas films on Disney+:

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Cast: Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, and a special appearance by Kevin Bacon and the band Old 97’s

Plot: Taking a break from saving the galaxy, the Guardians assign a new mission for themselves: make Christmas unforgettable for Quill and find him the perfect present. Marvel fans, this one’s for you!

Home Alone

Cast: Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Catherine O’Hara

Plot: After throwing a tantrum before a family trip, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister sleeps in the attic and is subsequently left behind by his family. When he wakes up, he finds himself facing off two thieves planning to raid his house. This classic Christmas movie will bring you all the nostalgic feels this holiday season.

One Magic Christmas

Cast: Mary Steenburgen, Gary Basaraba, Michelle Meyrink, Elisabeth Harnois, Arthur Hill, Harry Dean Stanton

Plot: With her husband Jack’s unemployment and her minimum wage job, Ginny is unable to muster even a little Christmas cheer despite her two kids’ wishes. Santa Claus gives angel Gideon a task: turn around the bleak holiday for the family before Christmas eve. You might find yourself relating to this more than not, with the challenging few years we’ve had due to the pandemic.

Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Cast: Mackenzie Foy, Keira Knightley, Misty Copeland, Jayden Fowora-Knight, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren

Plot: Based on The Nutcracker ballet, the film follows a young girl named Clara, who receives a gift from her late mother that suddenly transports her into a magical world filled with armies of gingerbreads and mice at war. Clara needs to retrieve a magical key to bring peace to the land of wonder she just discovered.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Cast: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, Ken Page, Edward Ivory

Plot: In this Tim Burton film, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king Jack Skellington is tired and bored of the repetitiveness of scaring people in the “real world.” So when he stumbles upon Christmastown, he hatches a plan to take over the town and replace Santa. But it doesn’t go as well as he hopes.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special

Cast: Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Larry Sapestein

Plot: If you enjoyed the series inspired by the original HSM movies, you’ll love this holiday special with Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and the rest of the HSMTM cast.

A Christmas Carol

Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes

Plot: Based on Charles Dickens’ novel of the same name, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, who detests the holiday season and believes Christmas to be fake and pretentious. When he gets visitors in the form of three spirits, Scrooge is forced to go on a journey through his past, present, and future that may just turn his jaded self around.

Frozen

Cast: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, Santino Fontana.

Plot: After their kingdom is trapped under endless snow, princess Anna enlists the help of mountaineer Kristoff and animated snowman Olaf to find her sister Elsa and break her winter spell. While not exactly a Christmas movie, the snow theme of this movie fits the bill pretty well.
