#TeamPotato: Why We’re Rooting for Do-hyuk as *the* One for Na-bi in ‘Nevertheless’

Everyone’s going gaga over how charming Jae-eon is in Nevertheless. And while we understand the appeal of his mysterious bad boy vibe (combined with Song Kang’s handsome AF face), we can’t help but see all the red flags Jae-eon is raising in our heads with every interaction with Na-bi. That’s why we breathed a sigh of relief when we finally met sweet and gentle Do-hyuk in episode 4. Played by new actor Chae Jong-hyeop from Sisyphus: The Myth (and who is just as cute and handsome as Song Kang!), Do-hyuk is such a breath of fresh air from all the uncertainties and toxicities we’ve seen in the first few episodes, especially in contrast to Jae-eon. If Jae-eon has raised red flags, Do-hyuk is giving us a whole lot of green lights, and here’s why.

Best boy with best manners

Na-bi bumps into Do-hyuk in a bus after so many years apart, but the childhood friends instantly recognize each other anyway. They catch up quickly until Do-hyuk accidentally spills his bags of potatoes and Na-bi has to get off the bus. She was ready to run through the pouring rain to get home, but was surprised when Do-hyuk followed her off the bus to walk her home. Even with his heavy bag of potatoes. That’s what you call dedication! (*cough* Take notes, Jae-eon. *cough*)

 

He remembered the little things

On the walk home, the childhood friends (friends lang ba talaga?!) reminisce about their memories from their hometown. It’s so cute how Do-hyeok looked so bashful when Na-bi was complimenting him. He’s falling fast and hard — or you know, just falling in love again.

 

And he remembered her birthday

Well, sure, Jae-eon was there during Na-bi’s birthday. But he immediately left her alone when the “friend” Seol-A called him. Plus, did Jae-eon cook seawood soup for her? She even asked for it, and he kept on promising he’d do it after they cuddled, but then he just up and left. Without cooking for Na-bi. Minus gwapo points, Jae-eon!

Meanwhile, we’ve got Do-hyuk who comes to the rescue with actual seaweed soup for her birthday. They haven’t spent a lot of time together recently, but he still remembered and even gave her a simple but sincere gift in the form of a birthday meal. Jae-eon could never.

 

He knows his boundaries

When they went on a road trip, Na-bi fell asleep inside the car while talking. It was cold outside, but Do-hyuk slept outside anyway to respect Na-bi’s boundaries. In contrast, Jae-eon would probably sleep inside with Na-bi, because hey, they already slept together anyway. But still, consent is key! Jae-eon could reallyyyyy never.

 

A real gentleman

When Na-bi woke up later to see Do-hyeok outside the car, she put a blanket over him to protect him from the cold. But our best boy put it back on her anyway.

In another scene when the friends go biking, he puts a sweater over the backseat to make the ride comfier for Na-bi. She didn’t even have to ask. He just did it. Because Do-hyeok just wants Na-bi happy and content and comfortable. Sana all.

 

He’s even fam-approved

Na-bi’s aunt, who lives in the hometown where she and Do-hyeok spent their childhood, tells her how cute Do-hyeok is now and how the two of them were so sooo close back then. “You liked him the most,” her aunt teases.

 

He confesses in words AND in actions

Do-hyeok does eventually confess that Na-bi is his first love, and we’re pretty sure he’s on his way to confessing that he likes her now, too. But more than just telling her, he actually puts his money where his mouth is. Do-hyeok goes out of his way to make her happy, and he’s just so genuine about all of it. He’s so excited to see her that he tells her that straightforwardly, even if he gets a little shy. Na-bi just needs to realize that everything she wanted to see in Jae-eon has always been right in front of her in Do-hyuk! Girl, open your eyes!

 

He looks at her in *that* way

You know, the way Na-bi probably looked at Jae-eon before being so disillusioned with their “relationship” or lack thereof. The way Na-bi wants Jae-eon to look at her. Even his boss knew about his crush immediately. That’s how in love Do-hyuk already is. We just wish Na-bi would realize it, too.

Do-hyeok sounds like a textbook nice guy-next-door — too nice, in fact, that we’re hoping the show won’t throw some plot twist about him being a creepy guy like Na-bi’s ex just so she’d end up with Jae-eon. Please, show, don’t do this to us. Do-hyeok is one of the very few likeable characters here, and we’d hate for that to change. Parang awa niyo lang.

In the meantime, we’re waiting to see what happens now that our love triangle is having a face-off in the next episode this Sunday on Netflix. Na-bi girl, please make the right, sensible choice and stay with Do-hyeok!
