Among the many K-drama releases recently, one of the most popular and a definite crowd favorite is Twenty Five, Twenty One. The nostalgic coming-of-age drama tells the story of young fencing star Na Hee-do (Kim Tae-ri) and budding journalist Baek Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk) as they struggle to realize their dreams in 1990s South Korea struck by the IMF financial crisis.
Fans absolutely love the plot, the cinematography, the storytelling style, and most especially the endearing characters and their perfectly cast actors. And now it seems viewers are speculating another perfect addition to the cast in veteran actor Gong Yoo!
Warning: Read with caution. Minor spoilers ahead!
Fans of the show are thinking that Gong Yoo might join the cast as an older version of Baek Yi-jin, whose younger counterpart is played by Nam Joo-hyuk. We’ve already met the older version of Na Hee-do in actress Kim So-hyun, but we’ve yet to see anyone else in the present time. We just know that her daughter Kim Min-chae (played by Choi Myung-bin) has a dad who is currently out of the country as of Episode 8.
A few weeks ago, Gong Yoo posted photos on Instagram, showing him watching Twenty Five, Twenty One. At first, fans thought the photo was shared in support of Nam Joo-hyuk, who is managed by the same agency managing Gong Yoo. He did the same for fellow labelmate Choi Woo-sik when Our Beloved Summer was airing.
But later on, a few fans started speculating that this might be a hint of a possible appearance in the show. Such an unannounced appearance would not be too surprising for Gong Yoo, especially after his brief yet much welcomed cameo in Squid Game last year.
The character Baek Yi-jin is a particular favorite among viewers. His wealthy family became bankrupt overnight due to the IMF crisis and was forced to separate. Despite growing up rich and popular then suddenly being forced to grow up quickly, he remained kind, humble, and approachable.
Many viewers have expressed delight over Nam Joo-hyuk’s performance, and lots of fans probably can’t see any other actor playing the character. But if it’s *the* Gong Yoo, we might just fall in love even more. Honestly, we’re already too excited about the possibility.

One fan even pointed out the possible connection between Na Hee-do’s daughter’s surname and the cameo appearances of writer Kwon Do Eun’s previous collaborators. The Twenty Five, Twenty One writer was apparently an assistant writer for Goblin, and Lee Dong-wook made a cameo appearance for her other drama Search: WWW. It seems now it’s the Goblin’s turn, according to this fan.
Kim Shin – Gong Yoo
If Grim Reaper (Lee DongWook) has appeared as cameo on Kwon Do Eun’s ‘Search: WWW’ (she’s assistant writer for Goblin, LDW did cameo to support her), now it’s The Goblin turn for #TwentyFiveTwentyOne.

Whether it’s true or not, we’ll see in the next few weeks as Twenty Five, Twenty One continues to air. Watch the drama every Saturday and Sunday on Netflix.
