Fresh off the 2022 elections, thousands of Filipinos already want re-electionist Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto to run as president someday. The 32-year-old was first elected as mayor in 2019 and has since proven a clean track record of good governance and transparency in office. A politician like Sotto is a rare find in our local government, a fact that’s incredibly despairing seeing as he’s just doing what he’s elected to do. Netizens flooded the comments section with dozens of reasons why they would never consider voting for Vico Sotto if he ever runs for president. Most of the comments say he’s “overqualified,” he has a degree, and they haven’t seen him sing karaoke or dance on stage either.
Sotto is one of the few government officials Filipinos have deemed as the “most trusted male figure in the government right now.” In 2021, US President Joe Biden’s administration even recognized him as one of the 12 global anticorruption champions. Filipinos admire Sotto so much that some even started a fandom (Vivico) as an inside joke.
Unfortunately, this makes him overqualified, according to netizens. The Philippines simply isn’t used to Sotto’s brand of clean government seeing.
Funny? Depressing? Sotto might not “qualify” for the presidency but at least those who actually approve of him can say one thing:
