Thriller Film ‘Nocebo’ Starring Chai Fonacier Has Finally Arrived in PH Theaters

Jan 24, 2023   •   Meryl Medel

For the past few years, Filipinos have continued to make it big on the international stage. Most recently, we had Dolly de Leon making a splash with her performance in The Triangle of Sadness. Only a few months before that, we also saw Chai Fonacier receive critical acclaim for her role in the Filipino-Irish psychological drama Nocebo. And now Filipinos will finally get a chance to see Fonacier on the local big screen.

Nocebo

Nocebo tells the story of children’s wear fashion designer Christine (Eva Green), who suffers from a mysterious illness. No doctor is able to figure out what exactly ails her — not until Filipino caregiver Diana (Chai Fonacier) knocks on her door. Diana uses traditional remedies to help ease Christine’s pain, but not all is as it seems.

Chai Fonacier’s performance, in particular, received much praise from critics. The New York Times lauded her for “her knack for coiled tension”, and Roger Ebert described her performance as “measured”, “well-realized and deeply felt.”

Released last November 2022, the film is directed by Irish filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan. It was produced by Brunella Cocchiglia and Emily Leo and co-produced by the Filipino production company Epicmedia.
