‘Perfect Crown’ Series Review: 7 Reasons Why It’s a Must-Watch (And One Reason It Isn’t)

Apr 20, 2026   •   Meryl Medel

If you’ve been suffering from a Korean drama slump, worry no more because we’ve found your next K-drama obsession in Disney+’s Perfect Crown. The new series has officially taken over the 2026 K-drama landscape, and for good reason. It’s a sophisticated, heart-tugging, and visually breathtaking series that demands your attention. And here are 7 reasons why you need to watch Perfect Crown (and just one reason you shouldn’t).

#1. The premise has us captivated

The story hits the ground running. In a modern-day Korea operating under a constitutional monarchy, we follow the collision of two worlds: a chaebol heiress who has everything but status and a prince who has nothing but status. The two end up in a contractual marriage arrangement, but things don’t go quite as smoothly as planned.

We’ve always loved a great story about modern monarchy — hello Princess Hours — so we’ve been hooked into this premise from the beginning. Add to that the powerhouse lead couple, and we’re so sat.

#2. IU and Byeon Wooseok makes their much-awaited drama comeback

In the acting industry, IU has been known as someone who picks great scripts which lead to success, as seen in her previous projects, like the most recent When Life Gives You Tangerines. Now, in Perfect Crown, unlike the typical soft-spoken K-drama female lead, IU’s Seong Huiju is loud and proactive. Watching her navigate the elite social circles of Seoul with such ferocity is so satisfying. Her unpredictability keeps not only Grand Prince I-an, but also us viewers on our toes.

After a long wait for his return, Byeon Wooseok delivers a heartbreakingly amazing performance as Grand Prince I-an. While his character is more restrained than IU’s Seong Huiju, the little moments we see the prince let himself go makes us want to root for him even more and reach through the screen and give him a hug — or even a legal defense team against the Queen Mother.

#3.There are no slow burns here

Well, at least none that we know of so far. As of Episode 4, the romance is fast-paced enough that you’ll find yourself refreshing the Disney+ app the second a new episode is out. We get a proposal by the end of Episode 2, can you believe that?!

It’s the kind of love story that makes your heart race, balanced with tension both in the palace and in the business world, forcing our lead couple to face fights on both sides.

On top of the fast-paced romance, it even flips the damsel-in-distress trope on its head, giving IU’s Seong Huiju social and financial agency. She even takes the lead in the courtship, aggressively pursuing the Grand Prince and pulling off moves often relegated to male leads.

#4.The chemistry is off the charts

At the heart of the series is the next-level pairing of IU and Byeon Wooseok. We still can’t believed the fate made it happen that they reunite in this series after their unfortunate end in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. In Perfect Crown, their ability to communicate volumes through a single glance makes us feel the kilig even through the screen.

But while the leads are electric, delivering kilig in each scene they’re in, the chemistry isn’t just limited to the main couple. Every interaction — whether it’s between the Seong siblings, the leads and their assistants, or even the gossiping palace staff — feels authentic, making us feel invested even in the side plots.

#5. It’s filled with familiar faces

One of the joys of watching Perfect Crown is the mini game of spot-the-actor in each episode. The production team went all out, filling the screen with familiar faces, even in the supporting roles and cameos.

Imagine having Heo Namjun as a blind date that the female lead rejects?! We can’t wait to see who we’ll see in the series next.

#6. There is much to learn about Korean culture

More than the romance, there is so much to learn and appreciate about the different aspects of Korean culture that is displayed.

From traditional ceremonies to sophisticated wardrobes and historical palaces, the show balances the traditional Korean elements with the digital, technologically-developed culture of modern Korea, letting us peek into how heritage survives in a fast-moving world.

#7. There are bonus little epilogues

After almost every episode, there is a little epilogue that further expounds on a scene shown earlier in the same episode. It’s like a little nugget of reward that makes the romance even more satisfying.

A bit of a spoiler, but that reveal in that first episode about the leads’ connection as senior and junior during their school days was so well done. Despite fans speculating over teasers, the actual execution was natural and still rewarding, proving that this show knows how to reward its audience without being predictable. Give us more, I beg!

The only reason not to watch

There is honestly only one reason to skip this: you’d end up hooked AF, and you’d be counting days ‘til the weekend. It’s the kind of show that ruins your sleep schedule, since you’d want to wait for 10:20 pm to watch the episode immediately. You’d want to rewatch so many scenes to the point of clipping them yourself and resharing on social media immediately, even long after the credits roll.

Our verdict: stream it or skip it?

Of course, we say stream it!

I can see myself going back to this series again and again. There are some series you would just want to watch again and again, and right now, my list is composed of dramas like Lovely Runner, Reply 1988, Hospital Playlist, and When Life Gives You Tangerines. While not yet completed, I can already see Perfect Crown joining my list of comfort K-dramas. And yes, I can’t wait for the weekend. Please fast forward, time!
