Still in a PPCD — Post-Perfect Crown Depression? The beloved modern-monarchy Korean drama just concluded its 12-episode run last weekend, and we’re already missing our favorite WanSeong couple. But not to worry, because the prequel web novel of Perfect Crown has just been released, allowing us a look into their royal academy days.

Perfect Crown, the web novel

Its title 21세기 대군부인 in 왕립학교 literally translates to 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife in the Royal Academy. The web novel complements the 12-episode modern monarchy romcom starring IU and Byeon Woo-seok.

Written by the drama’s scriptwriter Yoo Jiwon, the web novel has 30 chapters that explore the youth and relationship of protagonists Seong Huiju and Grand Prince I-AN during their royal academy days.

It also delves into the backstories of supporting characters such as the future Queen Mother Yirang and the future Prime Minister Min Jeongwoo.

Many fans’ questions after the drama ended were also answered in the prequel web novel, including why I-AN’s father insisted on keeping the succession line straightforward.

Perfect Crown, the K-drama

In case you haven’t tuned it to the most viewed Korean title premiere of all time on Disney+ (43 million hours streamed globally so far!), “Perfect Crown” is set in a reimagined modern-day Korea that operates under a constitutional monarchy.

It follows the people’s favorite royal, Grand Prince I-AN (Byeon Wooseok), as he becomes embroiled in a power struggle with other members of the royal family. With pressure on the prince to marry, he strikes up a marriage of convenience with Seong Huiju (IU), the heir to a Korean conglomerate, but while the pair will work together to advance their own ends, things don’t go quite as smoothly as planned.

All 12 episodes of “Perfect Crown” are now available for streaming exclusively on Disney+.
