BINI just marked another milestone, making their debut at Japan’s Summer Sonic Music Festival. As always, the Nation’s Girl Group has delivered with their show-stopping outfits. For their debut at the Japanese music festival, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena took the stage in bold yet sleek festival looks inspired by a Philippine legend.
Helmed by creative director Ica Villanueva, BINI’s looks for Summer Sonic Osaka drew inspiration from the legendary Sarimanok.
ICYDK, the Sarimanok is a mythical bird of the Maranao people, who hail from Mindanao. It often symbolizes prosperity and good fortune.

On Instagram, designer Cheetah Rivera shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the creation of the members’ unique outfits. She revealed that instead of using actual feathers, she painstakingly recreated the look of feathers using fabric.
“Tromp l’oeil, to mimic feathers using fabric,” the designer wrote in an Instagram story.
wdym fabric pala yung mismong feathers? i genuinely thought tjey were real.
but tbh, mas gets ko kung bakit fabric and ginamit. it keeps the outfit lightweight, durable, and easier for the girls to move in. especially habang nagpe-perform. plus, considering mainit yung timeslot… pic.twitter.com/Fbl0RLH39g

The results are bold and colorful looks that still delivered sleek silhouettes.
Because they used fabric instead of real feathers, the girls’ outfits remain animal cruelty-free. They’re also lightweight and easy to dance around in, especially in Japan’s summer weather.
The look is further enhanced by the gifted hands of makeup artists Anthea Bueno and Julius Cabanisas. The two worked together to create a cohesive continuation of the Sarimanok outfits, putting emphasis on the eyes while still giving each member a unique look that complemented their features and color tones.
Meanwhile, BINI took a new direction with their outfits for Summer Sonic Tokyo, with more frills and deeper tones that seem to be inspired by Filipino festivals.
