One-Hit Wonders of the 2000s

Mar 3, 2017   •   Mike Diez

Unlike the 90s, the music scene was a mess in the early 2000. Grunge was on its last breath and the boy bands were fast becoming too mature to be cute. But, as with every generation, there would still be gems to be found. Here are some of the best one-hit wonders and the songs that propelled them to great heights—even if only for a short period of time. And because we wanted to feature only good songs, “Who Let the Dogs Out” is not included here.

Evan and Jaron – Crazy for This Girl

.

Evan and Jaron are identical twins, and this single, released in 2000, was their one and only hit. And we know it was a hit because it was on the soundtrack of Dawson’s Creek.

Fountains of Wayne – Stacy’s Mom

.

Poor Fountains of Wayne. It’s bad enough that this was their only chart-topper, but people keep mistaking this original from the cover version made by the band Bowling for Soup eight years later. Oh well. At least they got Rachel Hunter on their video.

SR-71 – Right Now

.

You might think the name SR-71 was coined by the group to ride on the Blink-182 and Sum 41 numerically themed band names popular in the 2000s. But they were actually named after the Blackbird, an American supersonic surveillance aircraft.

The band, as the rest on this list, would not be able to duplicate the success of this, their hit debut single.

Daniel Powter – Bad Day

.

This song was heavily played when it came out in the early 2000s, but you don’t need me to tell you that. In fact, the mere mention of the name Daniel Powter would make you go where is the moment we needed the most…

Crazy Town – Butterfly

.

Here’s how crazy popular this song was: Crazy Town released their debut album in 1999 and had two unsuccessful singles. The album sold 100,000 copies.  In 2001 they released “Butterfly”, and the album’s sales went up to 1.5 million copies shortly thereafter.

Nine Days – Absolutely Story of a Girl

.

Released in 2000, Nine Days would top the charts with this sonic earworm. Woes with their label would eventually prevent them from releasing a second album, thereby dooming them on the one-hit wonders list.

The Darkness – I Believe in a Thing Called Love

.

The Darkness drew little interest as a band when they were starting out because no one would take them seriously. They were unapologetic about their anachronistic looks and sound. Maybe they were ahead of their time?

Stars Are Blind – Paris Hilton

.

Most people know of Paris Hilton some other way, but she predates the Kardashians before Kris Jenner ever thought of pimping her daughters. Also, Hilton had a certified hit in 2006 with this reggae-inspired song. And it was actually good.
