How to Plan Your Travel Budgets this Year

Jan 7, 2016   •   8List

Plan Your Travel Budget 2015
2015 was a great year for travel, but 2016 is looking to be an even bigger year for those with wanderlust. With the Philippines listed as a must-see destination, beautiful places that need to be on your bucket list and even options for visa-free travel, the year is almost guaranteed to satisfy that fernweh.

To get to these places, however, is a different ordeal altogether. Here’s how to make getting from point A to point B as hassle-free as possible.

8. Do your research.

It’s one thing to daydream about travelling the world but its another altogether to sit down and do your research. To some it’s a fun prospect, while to other’s it’s the most annoying thing to do, especially if you’re the type to just wing it (pro-tip: don’t). While you can throw a dart at a map and decide to go where it lands, a little research on your destination is a must. Check if you need a visa, if you require medical clearance like immunization shots, and about the local culture. We promise, you’ll get more even more stoked when you decide where to go and what it will be like when you get there.

7. Create an itinerary.

A little digging on travel blogs as well as personal ones can yield a goldmine of information. Where to go, places to see and where to stay should be determined during this phase of your planning. You can even print out your itinerary to post it where it will keep you motivated. That said, you’re always welcome to change certain visits and activities on your list the further you progress in your research.

6. Determine your budget.

Thanks to your extensive research, you now have an idea on how much the whole trip will cost you. It helps to divide your budget into the following categories: transport, food, lodging, entertainment, incidentals and, of course, pasalubong. Don’t forget to take into account your pre-trip preparations, like clothes (depending on the local climate), check-ups (depending on your doctor), shopping (for a new bag or anything else you might need) and other appointments (like getting a haircut or your nails done).

5. Set your goal.

Now that you have an amount to save towards, post it on your fridge or on your desk to stay motivated. Compute how much you need to put aside per paycheck and how long it will take to get to that amount. If you need to pick up other sources of income to make things move a little faster, go for it!
